MSX dons walking boots to fund vital cancer research

Travel retail specialist Macintyre Scott Xtra (MSX) is on target to raise £3000 for a head and neck cancer charity.

MSX, which specialises in bonded warehousing and bespoke services for the travel retail industry, assembled a team of 100 walkers to take on the Test Way in Hampshire to fundraise for Oracle Cancer Trust.

The charity is close to MSX, after its former managing director Fred Ridges died from throat cancer in 2004. The company is now headed up by his daughter, Nicola Ridges-Jones, who led the fundraising efforts.

Nicola said:

“There are lots of other types of cancers that are talked about a lot but head and neck cancers often tend to get less awareness raising in the press and, sadly, less funding for research.

“The lack of information and support out there was something me and my family experienced first-hand when my father was diagnosed. Doctors locally gave him six months to live but we refused to accept this and started looking into what other help was out there. We came across The Royal Marsden and Chris Nutting, who is part of Peter Rhys-Evans’ team, and the time and attention they gave him was amazing. With their help, he went on to live another two years and I cannot even put into words how grateful I am to the charity for giving our family that extra time together.

“I hope the money we raise for Oracle will go some way to helping other people in my father’s situation and ultimately find a cure for this disease.”

Through her business network Nicola managed to rouse 100 ramblers from nine different companies to take part in the walk, with some striding the whole 25.5 miles and others taking on shorter segments of the route.

Companies who took part include:

  • MSX
  • Carswell Gould
  • Barclays
  • Handlesbaken
  • Clarke Wilmot
  • Locators
  • Baker Tilly
  • Radcliffe’s
  • Twin Thieves
